Minimum of four participants for any custom group
For professionals, managers, team leads and more. In these custom, equine-guided professional development intensives, increase awareness and step up your leadership presence and abilities for more effective and productive results in your work and business.
Leading others takes leading ourselves effectively first, working from the inside-out and outside-in, in new and different ways. Walk away with a framework, tool kit and laboratory of experiences for your own authentic leadership. Leave excited, inspired, and able to make new and different contributions to your business and relationships.
Through unique exercises and experiences with horses:
- Gain valuable insight into emotional and social intelligence and its impact on leadership ability, relationships and team productivity
- Create effective and loyal followership; inspire commitment
- Learn to recognize and respect intuition and instinct (‘gut’)
- Build effective relationship and interactive practices
- Practice how to manage rapid change and get ‘unstuck’
As working with horses demonstrates, leadership is recognized through clear intention, authenticity, presence, purpose and how we hold our bodies. Through a grounded assessment process of an individual’s own current patterns of behavior, perceptions, and performance, participants are encouraged towards an effective and sustainable leadership presence and supported to explore new practices for achieving goals.
Each person is guided through a learning process that is centered on their individual, specific ambitions and goals for the future and to refine and create environments in which these can be achieved. The horse, in this process, literally guides the participant by reflecting inner states of mind and physical energetic states of presence and communication.
Discussion between activities creates unparalleled leadership learning. Reflective thinking, debriefing between exercises and final self evaluation for take-away learning is built into the learning process.
- Optional: monthly follow-up coaching by telephone for 3-6 months can be scheduled.
- No horse experience is required – we do not ride the horses.
- Customized retreats and development programs can last for one day, or 2-5 days, as well as fit into wider development programs depending on your unique needs. A minimum of 2 days is strongly recommended for overnight integration process and offers the most effective results.
- Contact us to discuss expected development outcomes, create your plans and make your reservation for your group or individual needs.
According to recent trends of leadership development, there are two points that are changing most rapidly:
Leadership is becoming more personal and internal
Leadership development is evaluated on an individual basis; the one-size-fits-all leadership training is no longer relevant. Leadership is more about who the person is (presence), and how they relate to others, rather than about how the person behaves or what skills they possess. More and more of leadership development is becoming about how to compel the respect and trust of others and how to inspire, rather than having these values automatically assumed and the leader being left to figure out how to maintain or establish leadership skills day to day or month to month.
The trial and improvement feedback loop for successful leadership development is happening at a faster pace
Sustainable leadership is learned, not taught. Therefore, the more immediate the feedback, the more efficient and sustainable the results. Businesses and organizations have fewer resources available to send their developing leaders to classes that can last weeks, only to then have them apply the techniques to team members over a period of months. Leaders need their learning and development to be in integrative increments that they can practice and embody – in the same day.
Embodiment of leadership presence is described as inspiring, motivating, commanding, energizing, credible, focused, confident and compelling. It’s the ability to direct the attention of others. Great business executives have it, great coaches have it, great community leaders have it, great politicians have it. It’s the ability to connect authentically and communicate effectively with others. When we connect with others we find ways to add value and recognize that everything has value – which builds capacity for choice and possibilities for expansion.
Through Equine-Guided Leadership Development we help each person discover his or her own authentic presence and potential ability to connect from the inside out by employing experiential exercises with horses. Leaders must form connections, communicate effectively and inspire their team. They must be able to influence and move others, directing their hearts and minds toward some common purpose, producing a desirable result for the group or organization. A successful leader can engage the full energies and dedication of others to a common end.
Equine-Guided Education experiential activities focus on how to connect as a team, authentically, communicate non verbally, and coordinate as a unit of one, while each individual possesses a clear focus and valuable job.
One of our hands-on learning exercise, called the ‘Horse Course’ involves problem solving, Appreciative Inquiry Method, positive risk taking, creative thinking, collaboration, goal setting and defining success as ‘when all members contribute to the outcome’.
The problem or project becomes a challenge and opportunity to build on strengths, provide information, generate creative sustainability, and build competency and capacity. Equine-Guided Leadership & Team Development is for anyone who must encourage achievement and positive change in any group. It can be a family, a community group, a non-profit organization, a government agency, a small business or a large corporation.
We offer a meaningful and relevant option with unique activities that not only fosters healthy and productive team development but also provides participants with a once-in-a-lifetime experience, creating long-lasting emotional, physical and mental memory and results. The emphasis is on experience and embodied learning.
Team learning offers participants to think outside the box, to be creative, open, non-competitive, ensuring everyone is included in the process. The two keys are to build a sense of trust between each individual with their unique talents and build trust among the group. Recent trends are showing that by providing team engagement events team members are allowed to become more familiar with each other and feel more connected. One client of an interactive, experiential team building event concluded that “human beings will always have a need to connect directly with each other. It is important to know others in your company, and how to connect to them.”
Staying on the ground with horses, everyone becomes fairly equal, especially when faced with a challenge. Sometimes the outcome can be surprising, for example the usual manager of the team may not turn out to be the most effective leader of the group in a horse-focused challenge. Another may rise with specific leadership qualities needed for the job.
A planned team building event can take from one day to a few days. A shorter-term event is best for building awareness of team building issues, while a longer-term event offers opportunities for application of learning and integration of ‘take-away’ tools. Depending on the needs of the business, organization or group, a team building activity or set of activities may not be the main event but rather an addition to a larger event, such as a strategic planning weekend or a company-wide annual training. All learning happens on the ground, horse experience or skills are not necessary.
We offer different approaches to build team performance:
- A focus on building personal motivation, engagement, and appreciation of others. This approach builds morale or helps integrate newer employees into the group.
- A focus on building teamwork skills such as communication, collaboration, problem solving, and support.
Flexibility – thinking outside the box; meeting others where they are; being clear about what is fixed and what is open to change; willing to give up expectations and adapt to new and different circumstances
Communication – mostly nonverbal, listening to what is not spoken; authentic connections; enhanced active listening skills; giving and receiving grounded assessments; making offers and requests; keeping promises; giving and receiving reports
Coordination – building unified teams so the group can thrive; becoming like minded to the end of a common goal; sharing common vision; defining a sense of meaning and purpose; utilizing different talents; creating awareness that each member’s position has value
Contribution – acknowledging, accepting and offering authentic value toward the same goal; “what is one step I can make to contribute to the success of the group?”
Trust – allowing team members to process openly in a natural and neutral environment, helps teams re-connect and re-align with the team’s purpose while supporting team members’ individual goals and development
- Initially, time is factored in for participants to get to know each other and the horses better, or ‘break the ice’ and feel more comfortable working with each other.
2. Various innovative activities are outlined to build and bond teams, designed to engage people in different ways and will focus in different areas:
- Development of nonverbal and verbal communication skills
- Awareness of leadership, management and/or team style
- Practice of overcoming obstacles and achieve objectives as a team
3. In between activities we hold reflective thinking and debriefing. At the conclusion of the day, we have a summary period for final self evaluation and awareness of take-away learning.

“I coach for companies who want to develop their talent, teams and leadership who want to get to their next level.” Lucinda Newman, Owner and Lead Coach, Horses and Pathfinders
“I’d recommend this to any organization. It provided an open atmosphere for discussion, trust and communication.” Brittany Tremblay, Coffee Lab International
“Horses and Pathfinders provided my team an opportunity to experience teamwork in a relaxed environment. Through Lucinda’s facilitation, each individual reflected on how they participated in the teamwork. Over the past several months I’ve noticed several positive changes in their communication with each other. Lucinda accomplished the most challenging part — getting the team to reflect on themselves and understand each other.” Sue Keenoy, Blue Cross Blue Shield
“Lucinda’s grounded, focused and engaging teaching style is beautifully complimented by the kinesthetic instinctive honesty of the horses. The work I did in her Leadership Training workshop remains a guiding force in my life every day. The most useful information for me was identifying my core values as a leader and acquiring the skill of using grounded assessments when working with others. The horses helped me understand what is a truly authentic and forward-moving direction in my career. I highly recommend both Lucinda and her equine guides for both personal and professional development. It is an experience you will never forget.” Suzanne Mancinelli, Dryad Design
